Description (HTML) The Home Mortgage Disclosure Act(HMDA) requires the collection of loan-level application and origination data. Covered institutions annually report to their federal regulator several required fields, including an identifier up to 25 characters long of letters and numbers, for each loan or application. The identifier must be unique within the institution, and it is "strongly recommended" that names and social security numbers be excluded from the identifier.33 Institutions have relative latitude to assign and report loan identifiers they may already be using for business purposes under HMDA. However, not all lenders comply with the recommendation, and some include borrower names or social security numbers in their IDs.
